I like the idea of Simpilot’s SMFRegister 1.0. Is there a way to make one similar to work for phpbb?
Yes have a search here, I had one working the code is here somewhere, the only downside was when users registered on the main site an admin or moderator had to manually accept in phpbb in to the correct user group and approve the account.
It worked well if you can live with that.

The easiest thing to do is to take the registration script that is native to the forum board you are using and modify it to be a phpvms module that listens for new pilot approvals, that is all I did really with the smf registration module.
