This month we are trying something new for our challenges where we will follow a real world flight in real-time and see if we can do better. It’s totally up to the pilot to choose a route and aircraft (as long as you’re rated for it). The real world ops title says it all. Pick a real world flight and fly it online at the same time the real flight is making the same flight in the real world. This however means there is no time offsetting allowed. So if you choose to fly during daylight hours, you will have to pick a fight that is flying somewhere in the world at the same time. The easiest way to pick a fight is to visit http://flightaware.com and select a flight. You…

This month, we depart Marseille Provence Airport (LFML) and travel to Courchevel is an airport serving Courchevel (LFML), a ski resort in the French Alps. The airfield has a very short runway of only 537 metres (1,762 ft) with a gradient of 18.6%. There is no go-around procedure for landings at Courchevel, due to the surrounding mountainous terrain. De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otters and DHC-7 turboprops served the airport in the past; however, the airfield primarily sees smaller fixed-wing aircraft such as Cessnas as well as helicopters at present. The runway has no instrument approach procedure or lighting aids, thus making landing in fog and low clouds unsafe and a…

The Games were held every four years from 1924 until 1936, after which they were interrupted by World War II. The Olympics resumed in 1948 and were celebrated every four years. This month, we depart Chengdu Shuangli (ZUUU) and travel to the highest airport supported in the FS world, Qamdo-Bangda (ZUBD) Tibet that has an elevation of 14,219 ft. Runway 14/32 is the longest publicly used runway in the world, at 18,045 ft or 3.42 miles. Until 2013, Qamdo-Bangda (ZUBD) was the highest airport in the world. That title is now held by Daocheng Yading Airport which is 238 ft higher, however no scenery is currently available to support a support an event. The low air density at this altitude makes a higher takeoff and landing true airspeed necessary, and therefore a longer runway. The airport is 2.5 hours by mountain road from the county seat of Chamdu. …

This month, we begin our Dangerous Approaches tour. These next few events will take you on some of the most dangerous approaches and airports in the world. These events will become part of a new tour later on this year. Our first stop will be Toronto’s Billy Bishop City Centre Airport, following a real world flight of Porter Airlines. One may not see Toronto City Centre as a dangerous airport. However, when you realize its approach path takes you into and then below one of the busiest airspaces in Canada. Toronto City Center is located on an island next to the downtown core of Canada’s largest city. Land long on this runway and you’re going to get more than your fe…

This month, we are heading to the checkerboard at Kai Tak which closed in July 1998. With numerous skyscrapers and mountains located to the north and its only runway jutting out into Victoria Harbour, landings at the airport were dramatic to experience and technically demanding for pilots. The History Channel program Most Extreme Airports ranked it as the 6th most dangerous airport in the world. Your mission is to depart from Ninoy Aquino (RPLL) and head to Kai Tak (VHHX) with the Canadian Xpress freeware or payware aircraft at your pilot rank level ONLY for this event. This means, a Master ATP rated pilot can only fly aircraft rated in the Master ATP service rank, Pilot…

Diamonds are forever, but it takes a lot of work to find them and too get them out of the ground. The Canadian North produces some of the finest diamonds in the world. Working underground and in the Canadian North can be very problematic for personal and equipment. The diamond mines of the North are only accessible by ice road during the winter months. During this short 10 week period, hundreds of trucks pull thousands of tons of equipment out to these remote locations. However it’s still a year round operation, so in the months when there is no ice road, the only way to get in to these mines is by air. The ice roads are gone but there is still a lot of small equipmen…

This month, we head to Central America where if you dig mountain scenery, then that might help you feel a little less queasy about flying in or out of Toncontin Airport (MHTG) in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Aircraft have to skirt around the mountains of the interior highlands to land in a valley 3,294 feet above sea level. On approach, airliners as big as Boeing 757s make a 45-degree bank to effectively reach the 7000-foot runway with well above average rates of descent. Winds require pilots to compensate while hustling their aircraft in a zig-zag path over the terrain. Departures require high rates of climb to clear the nearby peaks. Your mission is to departing from Miami (…

Madeira Airport (LPMA), formerly known as Santa Catarina Airport and informally known as Funchal Airport, is an international airport in the civil parish of Santa Catarina, municipality of Santa Cruz, in the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira. The airport was once infamous for its short runway which, surrounded by high mountains and the ocean, made it a tricky landing for even the most experienced of pilots. Its innovative solution allowed Funchal to receive the Outstanding Structure Award in 2004 by the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering, which aims at recognizing the most remarkable, innovative, creative or otherwise stimulating structure co…

Paro Airport has an elevation of 7,300 feet with surrounding peaks as high as 18,000 feet. It is considered one of the world's most challenging airports in the world as only eight pilots worldwide are certified to land at this airport. Flights at Paro are allowed under visual meteorological conditions only and are restricted to daylight hours from sunrise to sunset. It is one of only four airports in Bhutan. This month, your mission is to depart from Zia International Airport (VGZR) and fly to spectacular Paro (VQPR) with either the Bombardier CRJ-700 or Dash 8-Q400 which is available to all pilots regardless of rank, but only for the challenge. Anyone who holds a pilot’s licence in the real world know what it means to stay current. It doesn’t really take much, a medical every few years and required amount of flight time which requires that you to fly an hour at least once a month. So this month, we are keeping current on our flight hours. In order to do that, all the restrictions are coming off. You pick the airport, you pick the route, and you even get to pick the aircraft as long as that aircraft is a single engine piston powered prop. This month, the challenge is to pick your favorite airport and single piston aircraft and head out on an hour or so VFR flight. You can just go on a sightseeing trip and r…
