  3. Over the last 6 months, Canadian Xpress pilots have been participating in our 5th Year Anniversary Tour and the monthly challenges which were created by our Events Manager Dave (CXA007). This month we let the cat out of the bag and fill everyone in on where these routes came about. The 5th Year Anniversary Tour has been following the route of the 2014/15 Volvo Ocean Race which is a 7 team round the world race in 65 foot, 27,000 lbs sail boats. Crewed by 9 and supported by a hundred or so, the teams race for 9 months covering some 72,000 km in all seas and weather conditions. This month the race stops in Newport Road Island the teams depart for the start of Leg 7 to Lisbon Spain during the weekend of May 15-17. So in keeping with the 5th Year Anniversary Tour, the Canadian Xpress Management Team is heading to New Port that same weekend for a virtual meeting with our client. Canadian Xpress would like to invite all pilots & virtual airlines to join us on Saturday, May 16th at 10h00edt (14h00z) and 21h00edt (Sunday 01h00z) for our May 2015 fly-in where we will depart from Head office in Montreal (CYUL) and travel a short 348nm flight to T.F. Green Airport (KPVD) just outside of New Port and Providence RI. So feel free to pack them in to a Dash 8 or even a Duke for the trip down. This is an open invitation to all pilots no matter what your flying experience to attend this Canadian Xpress sponsored event that will be flown on the VATSIM network. More information regarding this event including operational details, charts, optional add-on scenery and Canadian Xpress Model Sets can be viewed by visiting www.CanadianXpress.ca or by directly downloading our Fly-In document here. 5. Telluride Regional Airport at an elevation of 9,078 feet above sea level, was the highest commercial airport in North America with scheduled passenger flights, until Great Lakes Airlines ended service in 2014. The runway is on a plateau and still dips slightly in the center, although the dip was more pronounced prior to a renovation in 2009. It can be a challenging but beautiful approach for pilots. During winter months, about 20% of the scheduled commuter airline flights end up diverting to other airports because of abruptly adverse landing conditions. When flying to the Telluride Regional Airport, pilots must be aware of unique issues impacting the airfield including high terrain exceeding 14,000 feet, as well as the airport's location on a plateau with a thousand-foot (300 m) drop to the San Miguel River below. Telluride Regional Airport is the destination in the Telluride Landing mission supplied with Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Canadian Xpress would like to invite all pilots & virtual airlines to join us on Saturday, April 25th at 10h00edt (14h00z) and 21h00edt (Sunday 01h00z) for our April 2015 fly-in where we fly from Oakland (KOAK) to Telluride (KTEX). This is an open invitation to all pilots no matter what your flying experience to attend this Canadian Xpress sponsored event that will be flown on the VATSIM network. 8. It is spring break, time to stand in airport lines for the second busiest flying weekend of the year. Isn’t it grand, lines of hyper kids and already stressed out parents, who can’t wait to head to places like Disneyland and the other theme parks in the warm sunny south. For this month’s fly-in, there are no hyper kids or stressed out parents, because we are doing the return leg. 11. Over the last 5½ years, Canadian Xpress® has visited some of the most amazing airports around the world. From time to time, we are going to hold a Throwback event of some of our earlier flights, so those pilots who are new to the flight simulator world can enjoy our past adventures. However these events aren’t simply just a recycle version of old. New flight plans, updated charts and scenery have been added where possible, to show off new add-ons and changes to the airports. This month we are doing a Throwback event to November of 2012 and revisiting Paro which is the only international airport in Bhutan. The airport is located 4 miles from Paro in a deep valley on the bank of the river Paro Chhu. With surrounding peaks as high as 18,000 ft it is considered one of the world's most challenging airports. As of October 2009, only eight pilots in the world were certified to land at the airport. Flights at Paro are allowed under visual meteorological conditions only and are restricted to daylight hours from sunrise to sunset. Canadian Xpress would like to invite all pilots & virtual airlines to join us on Saturday, February 21st at 10h00est (15h00z) and 21h00est (Sunday 02h00z) for our February 2015 fly-in where we fly from Delhi (VIDP) to Paro (VQPR). 16. For some places in the world the weather is warming up and spring is slowly starting to break free of winter’s grasp, if you live in the southern hemisphere. For those of us in the northern hemisphere winter is on its way. Already here in some places like Buffalo NY, it has seen 6+ feet of snow over a period of 3 days. This month, we are flying to the coldest airport in the world. Yakutsk Airport in Russia will allow you to experience what could be one of the chilliest travel hubs on the planet as the city is regarded as the coldest in the world. With the average temperature in January standing at around -39C (-38F). What makes this airport even stranger with its cold temperatures, is the airport isn’t high up in the mountains. It sits at only 275 feet above sea level. Canadian Xpress would like to invite all pilots & virtual airlines to join us on Saturday, December 20th at 10h00est (15h00z) and 21h00est (Sunday 02h00z) for our December 2014 fly-in where we will travel from the east coast port city of Magadan at Sokol Airport (UHMM) and head 630nm inland to Yakutsk (UEEE). 19. Normally at Canadian Xpress we avoid simulating real world events so that we stay neutral on current events in the world. However, we think this month’s fly-in is a subject that everyone can relate to no matter what your background. November 11th is Remembrance Day in Canada, the UK and all the commonwealth nations. In the United States it’s called Veterans Day. Regardless of the name, the meaning is the same. It’s a day to remember and to pay respect to those who have fought and gave their lives in the line of duty. Canadian Xpress would like to invite all pilots & virtual airlines to join us on Saturday, November 15th at 10h00est (15h00z) and 21h00est (Sunday 02h00z) for our November 2014 fly-in where we will travel from the Nation’s Capital of Ottawa (CYOW) headquarters of military command and fly to Halifax (CYHZ), home port for the Canadian Atlantic Naval Fleet and a major supply port during both world wars. 22. An aurora is a natural light display in the sky (from the Latin word aurora, "sunrise" or the Roman goddess of dawn), especially in the high latitude like Canada’s Arctic regions, caused by the collision of solar wind and magnetosphere charged particles with the high altitude atmosphere. The charged particles and solar wind are directed into the atmosphere by the Earth's magnetosphere. A geomagnetic storm expands the aurora zone to lower latitudes. Canadian Xpress would like to invite all pilots & virtual airlines to join us on Saturday, October 18th at 10h00edt (14h00z) & at 20h00edt (24h00z) for our October 2014 fly-in where we will travel from Vancouver (CYVR) and head north on an 1h45 minute charter flight to Yellowknife (CYZF) with people heading to Aurora Village to spend a night sleeping under the stars, taking in the spectacle of Canada’s Aurora Borealis. From Yellowknife our passengers will travel on to the Aurora Village for an evening they will never forget. This is an open invitation to all pilots no matter what your flying experience to attend this Canadian Xpress sponsored event that will be flown on the VATSIM network. 24. In August, 1949, Joey Smallwood, Premier of Newfoundland, had the opportunity to see Churchill Falls for the first time and it became his obsession to develop the hydroelectric potential of the falls. After years of planning, the project was officially started on July 17, 1967. The machine hall of the power facility at Churchill Falls was hollowed out of solid rock, close to 1,000 ft (300 m) underground. Its final proportions are huge: in height it equals a 15-storey building, its length is three times that of a Canadian football field. When completed, it housed 11 generating units, with a combined capacity of 5,428 MW (7,279,000 hp). Water is contained by a reservoir created not by a single large dam, but by a series of 88 dikes that have a total length of 64 km (40 mi). At the time, the project was the largest civil engineering project ever undertaken in North America. This month we are adding a bit of a twist as the event is not only a fly-in, it’s got a challenge feeling as well. The power station is getting ready for fall maintenance work now that the hot summer weather has passed and electricity demand is at its lowest point of the year. So for this month’s fly-in will be using cargo aircraft to ship supplies from Quebec City. Canadian Xpress would like to invite all pilots & virtual airlines to join us on Saturday, September 20th at 10h00edt (14h00z) & at 20h00edt (24h00z) for our September 2014 fly-in where we will travel from Québec (CYQB) to Church Falls (CZUM). Due to the size of the airport at Churchill Falls, the C130 or HS748 are recommended, but you can fly any cargo aircraft that is smaller than the C-130. Since these aircraft are limited on their navigational equipment, it’s going to be a test of your navigation skills as well. See you all on Saturday the 20th!
