You should never edit the default skin as it will get over written in updates and then all your hard work is gone forever. Do like he said and copy your template folder and rename it then upload it again. Now you need to go in and change the setting in your admin panel to your new skin name. Save. Now if you make any edits to the css file in your new copied skin, It will not show up until you change the path to your css file in the header. That link that piper posted is your best bet.
