Changing font?

I'm working on setting up a website for my upcoming VA. I tried changing the colors in the styles.css file, but the colors didn't change. Is their a guide for this anywhere?

The css property for font color is:

color: #ff0000;

the #ff0000 is a hex code for a specific color.

a good website to learn css or html is http://www.w3schools.com/
