Summer is here. For those of us in the south, we have been enjoying the warm weather for a few weeks now. Cottages are open, boats are in the water, and motorcycles are filling the road ways. However, the day still ends sometime between 8:30 & 9:00pm when the sun finally sets below the horizon. This isn’t the case for everyone. Canada’s Northern Territories and Alaska, the first day of summer is the peak of all day sunlight as the sun never sets in some places. Wouldn’t it be great to go golfing at 1:00am with the sun still high in the sky? This month we celebrate the peak of 24 hour sunlight in the north with a trip to Ketchikan Alaska on the Summer Solstice.…

It is spring break, time to stand in airport lines for the second busiest flying weekend of the year. Isn’t it grand, lines of hyper kids and already stressed out parents, who can’t wait to head to places like Disneyland and the other theme parks in the warm sunny south. For this month’s fly-in, there are no hyper kids or stressed out parents, because we are doing the return leg. Spring Break is over and it’s time to go home, so its tired kids and parents who are financially broke who can’t wait to get home and send their kids back to school. [Mar.26] Canadian Xpress March Fly-In - Ski Weekend In 1938, an explorer from a wealthy American family from Philadelphia named Joseph Bondurant Ryan came to the region prospecting gold. Accompanied by Harry Wheeler and Lowell Thomas, the American journalist, they climbed to the summit of Mont Tremblant with skis wrapped in seal skins for traction. After an exhausting trek to the summit, it's said that Joseph Ryan vowed to transform the landscape into a world-class alpine village. Only one year later, his dream was realized. On March 12, 1939, Joseph Ryan opened the Mont Tremblant Lodge, which remains part of the pedestrian village today. In its early years, Lowe…

On May 18th, 1980 at 8:32pst, Mount St. Helens after 2 months of increased seismic activity, catastrophically erupted. The eruption triggered an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale causing the North face to collapse into the Columbia River basin and reducing the mountain’s summit elevation from 9,677 ft to 8,365 ft. By 17:30pst that evening after more than 9 hours of a vigorous plume of ash, reaching 16 miles above seas level, the ash column began to decline. On that day 34 years ago this month, Mount St. Helens released 24 megatons of thermal energy, 1.5 tons of sulfur dioxide and 2.8 cubic kilometers of debris. Sadly the event also killed 57 people, and nea…

The Alps are the highest and most extensive mountain range system that lies entirely in Europe, stretching approximately 1,200 kilometres (750 mi) across eight Alpine countries: Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Slovenia, and Switzerland. The Alpine region has a strong cultural identity. The traditional culture of farming, cheese making, and woodworking still exists in Alpine villages, although the tourist industry began to grow early in the 20th century and expanded greatly after World War II to become the dominant industry by the end of the century. The Winter Olympic Games have been hosted in the Swiss, French, Italian, Austrian and German Alps. …

Normally at Canadian Xpress we avoid simulating real world events so that we stay neutral on current events in the world. However, we think this month’s fly-in is a subject that everyone can relate to no matter what your background. November 11th is Remembrance Day in Canada, the UK and all the commonwealth nations. In the United States it’s called Veterans Day. Regardless of the name, the meaning is the same. It’s a day to remember and to pay respect to those who have fought and gave their lives in the line of duty. Canadian Xpress would like to invite all pilots & virtual airlines to join us on Saturday, November 15th at 10h00est (15h00z) and 21h00est (Sunda…

With one of the most dangerous approaches in the United States, Eagle County Regional Airport serves the world-famous ski resorts of the Eagle-Vail area in Colorado. The Airport is largely seasonal, with the greatest number of scheduled flights operating during the winter months. During the ski season, Eagle County Regional Airport is the second busiest airport in Colorado after the Denver International Airport. Eagle serves as a great alternative to Denver for skiers in the Eagle Valley because of its close proximity to the major international ski resorts of Vail, Beaver Creek, Copper Mountain, Keystone and Breckenridge. Due to the abundance of flights into Eagle Count…

Samos Airport is named after Aristarchos of Samos, an ancient astronomer and mathematician, and lies within 5 km from the nearby town of Pythagorio. The airport features a single short runway serving both arrivals and departures. The airports surroundings leave little room for error or mistake on the behalf of the pilots – with nearby mountains and sea at the end of the short runway. Samos is the island airport with the most notorious landing approaches in Greece. It involves pure stick and rudder demanding hand-type of flying in between mountains. There are often strong Meltemi winds blowing from the north during the summer months which further contribute to the diffic…

An aurora is a natural light display in the sky (from the Latin word aurora, "sunrise" or the Roman goddess of dawn), especially in the high latitude like Canada’s Arctic regions, caused by the collision of solar wind and magnetosphere charged particles with the high altitude atmosphere. The charged particles and solar wind are directed into the atmosphere by the Earth's magnetosphere. A geomagnetic storm expands the aurora zone to lower latitudes. Canadian Xpress would like to invite all pilots & virtual airlines to join us on Saturday, October 18th at 10h00edt (14h00z) & at 20h00edt (24h00z) for our October 2014 fly-in where we will travel from Vancouver (CYV…

In August, 1949, Joey Smallwood, Premier of Newfoundland, had the opportunity to see Churchill Falls for the first time and it became his obsession to develop the hydroelectric potential of the falls. After years of planning, the project was officially started on July 17, 1967. The machine hall of the power facility at Churchill Falls was hollowed out of solid rock, close to 1,000 ft (300 m) underground. Its final proportions are huge: in height it equals a 15-storey building, its length is three times that of a Canadian football field. When completed, it housed 11 generating units, with a combined capacity of 5,428 MW (7,279,000 hp). Water is contained by a reservoir cre…
