Hello,

I have recently was shown this from a member of my Aviation/Simulation forum and would like to implement it, but before I do I have a couple questions to prevent some possible huge issues.

I already have Php locked to mySQL obviously for my forum. So...

  • Do I need to create a new domain for this? Otherwise I can't see how this can run on the same with my forum/SQL and as you can imagine am a little hesitant on running the installer(s) since I don't want to hose all the work I've done.
  • Can I just add it to it's own folder and install from there? And how would that still effect the fact that my domain already has php and sql tied to it?

Thanks for your time,

~Dan

You can run PHPVMS in a sub folder on your site without any issues or the need to purchase another domain. Something like www.yoursite.com/phpvms. As for the database, you could create a separate database if you want to as long as your host allows you to create multiple databases. I personally run my forum and PHPVMS off the same DB and have never ran into any issues. With that being said you should backup your database before you do anything just as a precaution.

Thanks Keith,

I mainly don't want to run the install of the DB for the same and then have it rewrite any of my tables which is my primary concern. It wouldn't be a concern if I created both at the same time of course. My current host allows the sub domains but currently looking to move before Feb (when my contract is up). And yes, I backup my DB if I feel a sneeze coming on ;)

I also wasn't sure if it came with all the needed files, php, html etc... and didn't know if it would need to be in the php root folder. If I do a fresh PHP install from it's install folder that could hugely toss a wrench into the mix if you know what I mean.

Thanks for the help,

When you download PHPVMS it comes with all the files needed. Check out the below tutorial on how to get PHPVMS up and running.

Thanks again Keith,

You should stop by my forum sometime. I am mostly a Flash web designer and my forum has things I think you'd like. Always looking for some good peops and maybe you can answer some of my questions there on VA's haha. I honestly have too little time to sim these days but hope someday I will have time to get back into it. I spend more time making the forum more entertaining than anything else it seems.

Check it out: http://www.dantrix.net

One thing however. We keep things more personable on my forum so people must adhere to two simple rules. You use peoples names first of all, and people that cannot be friendly, cannot be members, simple.

I have installed phpVMS on the same DB as phpBB 2.x as well as phpBB 3.x, SMF, and a couple other forums and no tables ever get over written. Unless you rename a bunch of tables and coincidentally they match names EXACTLY, you would have no issues at all installing on the same DB.

Posted

Thanks, I see that now and thought it would be creating the same tables such as phpbb_users.

Major kudos to the creator of this and as soon as I rejoin the employed (hopefully soon) will certainly be making a contribution for such efforts.

One thing that seems to have not been mentioned that I would imagine a lot of peops have and will run into is there is no mention of the fact that you need to first have Php active and installed before you can run any php scripts such as the install.php. Some hosts/sites (and I have 3 hosts/ 12 websites) do not have this on by default. Just thought I would mention it since the setup guide for dummies leaves this pretty important piece of info out. I saw it and quickly knew what it meant but others may not.

Otherwise they can expect to see this or similar error:

PHP Warning: Unknown(): Unable to load dynamic library 'E:\custom_com\php_extensions\php_gd2.dll' - The specified module could not be found. in Unknown on line 0

New problem.

I setup everything but cannot do anything at the log in page. If I click Register, pilots, login, live map, anything the page stays the same. If I enter my login details as I have from the setup page the page before (when I did the final steps) the screen just refreshes. I can see it saying it has changed at the top of the page, but nothing has changed as far as what you see.

The page is http://danlines.massholemotel.com (A test site before my actual).

I have tried both IE and my preferred FF and same thing. No errors during install and everything appeared to go correctly with one exception.

In the setup guide it states to use phpvms_ as the prefix. This isn't possible on any of my hosts and the DB always starts with the prefix of the persons account name, always. I have 3 forums setup this way with no issue and as I stated, I got all success after installing using the SQL DB that I did.

The problem looks just like this user explained in his post last July: http://forum.phpvms.net/topic/3260-registration-error/page__p__22012__hl__%22cannot+register%22__fromsearch__1#entry22012

Thoughts?

If need be I can replace all references of all the package files from phpvms_ to what my DB is but that doesn't appear to be the issue here.

I have not edited or made any modifications at all, this is the package I downloaded with 0 changes.

Tried it on another site, same issue. I get to the page that states:

"Your site is all setup! You can login to your site from the front-page, and then proceed to admin panel here".

I cannot log in and the screen just refreshes when I try anything, to include logging in. No errors either in my logs. I have been reading posts here all morning and nothing so far. I see people with the same issue but no resolutions yet on any of them. One person stated it just started working so guess I'll just have to cross my fingers for now and hope for the same.

That's weird. Please do what the below page asks you to do and post the your findings in this thread.

http://forum.phpvms.net/page/index.html?record=31

That will help us figure out what is going on with your install.

Thanks,

All logs are completely empty. I enabled 'DEBUG_MODE', true and tested some buttons, tried to log in etc and all logs are 0 bites. I would have replied sooner but I had to wait on verification from my host as to the files attributes. They say they are all fully writable. My username for the DB also has full permissions set. very very strange.

Should I change all the references in all the files from phpvms to my table? Early in the dummies guide it says to create a folder and dump all the files into that folder etc... I just renamed the phpvms.full to phpvms which is the same thing, although I can't see why I would need to do any of that. I should be able to just dump it as is (the contents and subfolders I mean within the zip) to my root directory as one would a phpbb install.

Anywho, I tried various ways, with various DB's and nothing.

Check for yourself. I moved it's home 4 times now. The current directory is http://danlines.massholemotel.com/phpvm

PS. I've also checked with a couple friends of mine that host sites. Only one has replied but he can't create a DB table as the instructions say either, meaning the instructions insist that you create phpvms_ which cannot be done apparently by all hosts. Looking at the results above this "seems" to show it took and didn't matter but my next test will be renaming all the mentions of phpvms to my table and prefix (edit: I tried this and I had the same result).

Edit:

One thing that looks to be a mistake in the pdf but not sure is when doing the install.php it shows the "Website URL" as http://www.yoursite.com/phpvms_prefix. This doesn't make sense to me. Obviously I enter my root directory here but what's the deal with the ending database table and prefix?

Also for "Table Prefix" it shows phpvms_. That's not a correct entry from where I'm sitting. Yes mine is different and I tell it that, thus the success on the installs but it sure does make things a tad confusing.

I just want to make sure I'm inputting the correct data in the fields and reading the doc right.

Still could use some help here. I still have nothing in the logs but using some web tool plugins for Firefox I see there are a ton of css errors being found.

Here's just one that mentions "CSS Error: Error in parsing value for 'filter' declaration dropped".

Warning: Expected declaration but found '*'. Skipped to next declaration.

Source File: http://mail.yimg.com/a/combo?/mg/11_4_15/css/generic.css&/mg/11_4_15/css/mail_blue_all.css&&/gx/t12a/css/us/6134f27d2e4d647ed9fd026439cb1937_1.css

Line: 416

Do I need to do anything specific to maybe install Ajax prior or after to this install? I don't use Ajax, at least not mods that use it and have no options for it so imagine it's being installed with the full package I downloaded.

One new error on yet another install on a different domain and completely different host... (The above link is still live so feel free to try, please).

Error: Permission denied for <https://view.atdmt.com> to call method Location.toString on <http://us.mc1302.mail.yahoo.com>.

The above error here is not seen or evident without running the FF web developer plugin.

I think there is something wrong with the release personally, maybe it got corrupt? Two different hosts and 5 different site, with multiple installs now and still out of luck.

Where's the creator of this? I would really appreciate his thoughts on this and would save me a ton of more aggravation. It sounds like no one else has a clue. If the developer doesn't either it would be great to hear (see) him say that so I can just scrap this idea since it's obviously not going to start working on it's own and I have now put 2 days into doing everything I can think possible but am now at my wits end.

I have one ftp log in and password per host, that would mean I give you access to at a minimum of 4 of my sites, these are mostly professional web sites for clients and only a couple are for my own entertainment purposes. Clearly there should be another way and I appreciate the offer but hope you understand why I cannot. I will provide as much information as possible and feel that I have already possibly explained too much, meaning I know people rather do, than read but I followed everything to a T, and think I've posted everything possible.

I am open to suggestion, but if anyone has web developer for firefox, a fair understanding of this product should be able to (hopefully) see it. I think it was with the things I mentioned above but again think I mentioned too much information here and people just aren't reading.

Let me know what to try and I will. If I already tried it, I'll copy and paste that from above.

I have 3 vent accounts if anyone wants access to any of those. Perhaps we can go over it on there? (Vent does have chat if you don't have a mic).

It appears lots of your files are broken... check you've uploaded everything properly.

Also, just to remove your confusion here: your host enforces a prefix on your database names (in this case they appear to be Danbo34_), however you do not have any table name limitations, which is what the phpvms installer is asking you. You can just leave phpvms_ in your table prefix field and it will work fine.

Hi guys, sorry for the late reply, I took ill and have only now turned on the comp to check some emails.

@Joeri

I don't have either of those. If I don't get things settled tomorrow I will reinstall MSN. I had that once and just need to remember my user name. Thanks.

@ Tom

The last 2 installs I tried doing as I mentioned with replacing all mentions of phpvms_ with danbo34_ since that was one issue I thought it was. As you can see with my first attempts there were 0 issues or errors.

@ Nabeel

Thanks for piping in. I don't know what problems php would have being that I have 2 perfectly functioning forums on that host. The server is a Windows server and is running PHP Version 5.2.13. Does phpVMS need something different? The current testing place of http://danlines.massholemotel.com/phpvm is hosted by hostdepartment.com. Although I have had numerous issues with them in the past have not with PHP of any kind. Zend extensions? Yes, but not PHP. It's where I host all of my Flash sites as well as 2 of my 3 phpbb3 forums.

I will try again tomorrow hopefully as I just drank about half a bottle of NyQuil and should be out for the count soon. Let me know your thoughts and will try them all soon as I can.

Thanks.

The table names have no connection to corrupt files, that's not possible.

I think the best bet for now is to have someone else do it - don't worry about there being access to other sites, joeri is trusted :)
