This month, we depart Chengdu Shuangli (ZUUU) and travel to the highest airport supported in the FS world, Qamdo-Bangda (ZUBD) Tibet that has an elevation of 14,219 ft. Runway 14/32 is the longest publicly used runway in the world, at 18,045 ft or 3.42 miles. Until 2013, Qamdo-Bangda (ZUBD) was the highest airport in the world. That title is now held by Daocheng Yading Airport which is 238 ft higher, however no scenery is currently available to support a support an event. The low air density at this altitude makes a higher takeoff and landing true airspeed necessary, and therefore a longer runway. The airport is 2.5 hours by mountain road from the county seat of Chamdu. …

I am pleased to announce that RCJ Transport VA is back in operation, although in a limited capacity. We currently service Europe and select US cities. In October 2015, we experienced a once in a lifetime event. The "1000yr flood" as it was called by the Governor of SC, Nikki Haley. The flooding destroyed many homes, businesses, and left thousands with nowhere to go. Being a VA, one would think how could such an event impact you? The building housing our servers was completely destroyed. My neighborhood was under water for almost 2 weeks. We were able to get a small backup completed before we went off-line. Through the tireless efforts of our staff and some volunteers (fri…

We start the New Year off with a return to one of the most talked about and enjoyed fly-ins we have done thus far. The trip in to Ketchikan Alaska is by far the favorite of everyone, who has been around Canadian Xpress over the last 6½ years. Ketchikan (PAKT) has no direct road access, nor does its airport. Passengers must take a 7 min ferry ride across the harbour to reach the airport. Along with its breath taking scenery, it’s every pilots dream to see. But don’t lose sight of what you’re doing, the terrain causes turbulence on arrival and departure, plus there are air taxis, and sea planes landing and taking off on the harbour, along with local bears and the odd…

Welcome to V Group Virtual, Australia’s Next Generation VA. V Group Virtual is a group-based Virtual Airline incorporating Virgin Australia holdings series of airlines including Virgin Australia, Tiger Air Australia and Virgin Australia Regional (formerly SkyWest) The small but multi-skilled staff team have been hard at work over the last few months to bring together a cohesive brand and package that we think pilots will love, from artisan schedules (allowing pilots to pick flights that operate with different aircraft on different days of the week, true to their real world counterpart) and a progressive but easy-to-climb rank structure and a better shop system for pil…

This month, we depart Marseille Provence Airport (LFML) and travel to Courchevel is an airport serving Courchevel (LFML), a ski resort in the French Alps. The airfield has a very short runway of only 537 metres (1,762 ft) with a gradient of 18.6%. There is no go-around procedure for landings at Courchevel, due to the surrounding mountainous terrain. De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otters and DHC-7 turboprops served the airport in the past; however, the airfield primarily sees smaller fixed-wing aircraft such as Cessnas as well as helicopters at present. The runway has no instrument approach procedure or lighting aids, thus making landing in fog and low clouds unsafe and a…

The Bermuda Triangle, also known as the Devil's Triangle, is a loosely defined region in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean where a number of aircraft and ships are said to have disappeared under mysterious circumstances. According to the US Navy, the triangle does not exist and the name is not recognized by the US Board on Geographic Names. Popular culture has attributed various disappearances to the paranormal or activity by extraterrestrial beings. Documented evidence indicates that a significant percentage of the incidents were spurious, inaccurately reported or embellished by later authors. In a 2013 study, the World Wide Fund for Nature identified the wor…

This month, we head to Central America where if you dig mountain scenery, then that might help you feel a little less queasy about flying in or out of Toncontin Airport (MHTG) in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Aircraft have to skirt around the mountains of the interior highlands to land in a valley 3,294 feet above sea level. On approach, airliners as big as Boeing 757s make a 45-degree bank to effectively reach the 7000-foot runway with well above average rates of descent. Winds require pilots to compensate while hustling their aircraft in a zig-zag path over the terrain. Departures require high rates of climb to clear the nearby peaks. Your mission is to departing from Miami (…

[Mar.26] Canadian Xpress March Fly-In - Ski Weekend In 1938, an explorer from a wealthy American family from Philadelphia named Joseph Bondurant Ryan came to the region prospecting gold. Accompanied by Harry Wheeler and Lowell Thomas, the American journalist, they climbed to the summit of Mont Tremblant with skis wrapped in seal skins for traction. After an exhausting trek to the summit, it's said that Joseph Ryan vowed to transform the landscape into a world-class alpine village. Only one year later, his dream was realized. On March 12, 1939, Joseph Ryan opened the Mont Tremblant Lodge, which remains part of the pedestrian village today. In its early years, Lowe…
