But, it was a request for an addon to phpVMS, was it not? If so, it assumes that the VA will continue using phpVMS. In the past year, I changed from VAFS to phpVMS, from a Simple Machines forum to phpbb and have changed blogs galleries. If I need to change any one of those in the future, I am not locked into changing the whole thing. I can change only what I need to change. But if everything is "integrated", I can either stay with the last working version or face the task of rebuilding the entire site. Besides, if a pilot is incapable of figuring out how to register for a forum or gallery in 2 or 3 minutes, he or she won't survive my VA, anyway.

Agreed, but you are basing that on two assumptions. 1.) Nabeel will never get bored with phpVMS. 2.) No one will release a better VA management system.
-
Is it just me, or does anyone else think this is like reinventing the wheel. There is already a plentiful amount of software available for photo galleries, forums and blogs, that can be integrated into a site.
-
There was no need to edit local.config. One of the best features of phpVMS is that it looks for customized templates in yiour skin folder. I just tested this and found it works for the registration email.

In .htaccess, one little line takes care of disallowing directory browsing. Options All -Indexes

Yep. Make sure the radio button for deny access is selected before you generate the code. Just so you know what it looks like, here is a sample. ## Country: CONGO, THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE # ISO Code: CD # Total Networks: 10 # Total Subnets: 16,896 deny from 41.78.104.0/22 deny from 41.79.232.0/22 deny from 41.189.192.0/19 deny from 41.190.80.0/22 deny from 41.215.252.0/22 deny from 41.222.196.0/22 deny from 41.222.216.0/22 deny from 41.223.104.0/22 deny from 193.110.104.0/23 deny from 196.22.8.0/22 It is all plain text and the .htaccess file goes in your root HTML folder.

There are a number of sites, that describe all the options available in .htaccess, including the one Nabeel posted in this thread. Google is your friend. They will probably describe things better than I would. If you want to block whole countries, Country IP Blocks has a nice way of preparing the entries you will need to deny access.

Sometimes, incidents like this serve a useful purpose. I hadn't paid too much attention to securing certain things. After all, it's a VA, not the CIA or Mi6. However, I spent most of yesterday, taking care of business. I adjusted my .htaccess file so it is no longer possible to browse directories. I also added index.php pages to those directories that might be tempting. Those pages contain a script that provides me with information on who is attempting to view those directories. Then, I went a bit further. I blocked a few countries I'm not on good terms with, I blocked anonymous proxy servers and so-called "bad" bots. (I didn't know there was such a thing as good bots.) And, to tidy things up, configured things so the server will not show what is in my .htaccess or other configuration files. All in all, it was a fun day.

I don't see the problem. Just like in the real world...there are large airlines and small airlines. It is tempting to want to be a big fish in a small pond, but I would think that having a VA that does the type of flying you enjoy most, is much more important than where that VA is ranked.

Unless bots have started using dialup networks, it was definitely human. I'll be kind and not say where.
-
Very interesting. I was already in the process of adding things to .htaccess. Thanks

Thanks, Tom. That was far too simple a solution for me to ever have thought of it.

I just caught someone rummaging around in my /phpvms/lib directory. One can assume someone wanted the code from one of my templates. Does anyone know of a way to prevent access to the directories without hampering the operation of the site? As for the person who did it, he or she was probably unaware that I log every access to the site and have their IP address, country, browser and system information. If that kind of activity continues, I will gladly publish it all over the internet.

I'm sure it is possible, but I don't have anywhere near enough PHP knowledge to figure out how. I experimented today to see if I could figure it out, but no success. I'm sure someone who actually knows what they are doing, will provide an answer, soon.

Very nice. If you did not notice under Airline stats, you omitted the code to display the total number of pilots.
-
It's cheap enough, so I'll take a look at it. There is a free demo, but demos never tell the whole story. The only thing I can't figure out is with scenery coverage only to the 70s, what happens if you fly a transpolar route?
-
At least the CRJ video looks like it was done on a modern computer.
-
I'm not sure that is wholly true. I have a couple of "pilots" who are active with other VAs, joined Omega-Air, but never flew, nor became active in any other way. So, I have my suspicions. I don't try to recruit pilots, anywhere. It never gets the type of people we're looking for.

From what I can see, it might work with the 3 panels, but not the gauges. Disregarding the hardware issue, I looked at all the videos on the X-plane site. They all looked fuzzy and had anti-aliasing problems. The same with the screen shots. Also, the clouds generated are...boring. If I am going to do a 12 hour flight, I'd really like to have something worth looking at. I'll stick with FSX. Its scenery may not be the best in all parts of the world, but at least it includes the entire world.
-
Three Saitek panels and six Saitek gauges.
-
I'll stick with FSX. I've got over $1000 in hardware that won't work with X-Plane, and software...lets just say that my FSX folder is almost 140 GB in size. Much too large an investment to throw away.
-
I wouldn't call it a critique...just help so I wouldn't get confused.
-
I saw a post that reminded me of something about the site. Wouldn't it be more logical to put the latest stable release, first on the page, instead of the older versions?
-
The problem turned out to be that your server didn't like the hyphen in Omega-Air. When I entered it without the hyphen, it worked. Go figure.

I think he is saying that he knows of a VA that isn't displaying it. Beyond that, I don't know the purpose of this whole thread.
