One may not see Toronto City Centre as a dangerous airport. However, when you realize its approach path takes you into and then below one of the busiest airspaces in Canada. On May 18th, 1980 at 8:32pst, Mount St. Helens after 2 months of increased seismic activity, catastrophically erupted. The eruption triggered an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale causing the North face to collapse into the Columbia River basin and reducing the mountain’s summit elevation from 9,677 ft to 8,365 ft. By 17:30pst that evening after more than 9 hours of a vigorous plume of ash, reaching 16 miles above seas level, the ash column began to decline. On that day 34 years ago this month, Mount St. Helens released 24 megatons of thermal energy, 1.5 tons of sulfur dioxide and 2.8 cubic kilometers of debris. Sadly the event also killed 57 people, and nea…

On April 10th 1976, Air France made its first commercial passenger flight with Concorde. That first flight took passengers from Paris to Rio via the Azores which later changing to Dakar. The stop in the Azores was needed so that Concorde could refuel. The aircraft used an astonishing 2 tons of fuel just to taxi to the runway (2% of its total fuel load) in Paris. Normal operations called for the two inboard engines to be shut down as the aircraft exited the runway after landing, to help save on fuel cost. In 2003 BA and Air France both announced they would stop flying the Concorde after 27 years of service. Lots of reason still float around today as to why it was retired. …

This month is about FlightSim Easter Eggs. What is an FS Easter Egg you might ask? Easter Eggs in the computer software world are little hidden secrets developers write in to their software to give you a little shock and surprise should you find them. Easter Eggs have been in FlightSim since the early days back as far as FS4. Where the Prudential sign on One Prudential Plaza in downtown Chicago, would light up as the sun set. FS2000 added more Easter Eggs, like the tethered weather blimp 14,000 feet above the Florida Keys. Some of these Easter Eggs are very time specific, where others can be seen at any time. For this month’s challenge we are going back in time, back t…

Diamonds are forever, but it takes a lot of work to find them and too get them out of the ground. The Canadian North produces some of the finest diamonds in the world. Working underground and in the Canadian North can be very problematic for personal and equipment. The diamond mines of the North are only accessible by ice road during the winter months. During this short 10 week period, hundreds of trucks pull thousands of tons of equipment out to these remote locations. However it’s still a year round operation, so in the months when there is no ice road, the only way to get in to these mines is by air. The ice roads are gone but there is still a lot of small equipmen…

About a year ago I had the idea to make a virtual airline search engine, see this thread: http://forum.phpvms.net/topic/8440-anyone-interested-in-a-va-search-engine/ For those in a hurry without time to look through the thread: I proposed (and now created) a search engine where pilots can find a VA that suits their specific needs eg one that lets them fly their favourite aircraft and/or their home airport, VATSIM/IVAO support, real or fictional airline, restrictions like jumpseat or entry exam etc etc. At the time I had other things to do, and never got it off the ground. Now though, I've put my shoulders under it and here is the result: http://www.virtualairlines.eu …
