stuartpb
I've seen a few people making and distributing IFE systems for VA's to offer to their pilots, but I don't buy into the concept. I understand that a long haul flight can be boring, but I don't see a need for an IFE. Those I've seen being advertised here are just glorified iframes with media being streamed from external sources inside them. There is no integration with the flight sim software, so it's just as easy to run the sim in a window, and watch media stored on the PC in another window. costs nothing, and almost certainly works better than some of these IFE's. Another thing to consider if the media being streamed is stored on the VA's server, is that streaming media is bandwidth hungry, and this could very easily see the VA falling foul of any fair usage policies the web hosts have. Some hosts don't allow for media streaming in their T&C's too. There are a few legal issues to consider too, where the VA could land in hot water because of them. If the content being streamed through the IFE is protected by copyright, then this could land the VA in deep trouble with both the law and their web hosts. Placing digital content inside a branded iframe (the IFE) could be counter to the usage rights of the owner of the digital media, so that could land the VA in trouble. Maybe it's me missing a trick here, but I doubt it to be honest. I think that IFE's are a waste of any VA's resources, and a waste of server space. I've had a look at some of them (without mentioning names), and the coding behind them is terrible, by which I mean really, really sloppy. As you may have guessed, I won't be using an IFE anytime soon
Moderators Kyle Posted August 27, 2012 Moderators Report Share Posted August 27, 2012 Stuart, I agree with you. It better watching movies on my media than getting into trouble for digital content. When I used to fly long hauls, I can watch media on my PC, easy. But the only thing that still gets me, these IFE Systems are high priced, and the owner will get into trouble and their money is wasted... Although, I wouldn't buy an IFE becasue of the copyright issue here.
Moderators joeri Posted August 27, 2012 Moderators Report Share Posted August 27, 2012 i agree also its mostly a wast of money as like mentiont you probably will get in trouble for playing copyrighted material. and for a longhaul flight i mostly do stuff arround the house like cleaning and stuff
Moderators servetas Posted August 27, 2012 Moderators Report Share Posted August 27, 2012 Personally i use Firefox, Dreamweaver and Photoshop. If someone can combine these programms into an IFE i would buy it. Obviously, it can't be done...
CPC900
and for a longhaul flight i mostly do stuff arround the house like cleaning and stuff Exactly. Or go out to pick up something etc. I like to simulate, but not to the extent that on a 12 hour flight, I am going to sit in front of my computer for those 12 hours. Every now and again, I even simulate that my co-pilot has the controls and I need a sleep
magicflyer
Hello, I am not aware of how other IFE's are made, but I am aware that the one I make(DYNIFE) is completely Non-Copyrighted Media. NO FILES ARE STORED on the Virtual Airlines Server, therefore bandwidth will not be affected much. All movies/music are from a third party website, that is licensed and also allows other sites to use their media under certain conditions, that of which are all respected by DYNIFE. Pilots are able to just browse the internet for entertainment, but that is only a little part of what DYNIFE does. The system I created is focused more on automated announcements, that gives realism. I am sure that the average pilot would rather go in a virtual airline that offers such feature for free, than purchase a payware addon like Fs-passengers. Dynife is made for the virtual airlines that wants to offer more to a pilot, not only for entertainment but also for a step closer to realism. The Module I offer is not at all high priced, but I agree that some others are. One of the reasons I created DYNIFE is due to the abnormal price that some offer it for. I decided to make one that offers more for less. I am a perfectionist, Therefore I spend hours getting a design right and perfect. For the price it is offered it is as I am offering it free. i agree also its mostly a wast of money as like mentiont you probably will get in trouble for playing copyrighted material. and for a longhaul flight i mostly do stuff arround the house like cleaning and stuff Isn't Global One known for its IFE? Dont you guys play copyrighted materials(Like Casino Royale) from http://www.novamov.com a cloud sharing website making this copyrighted movie illegal to store in their server?

mischka
I agree with stuartpb that it's a waste of resources. After all, the IFE which the passengers have in the seat in front of them is not installed in the cockpit, so why have it in FS? If you let george fly the aircraft just go outside and get a bite of fresh air, shag the "stewardess" (if you have one) or do something else that's useful
